Old Computers and the Emulators That Run Them, an Overview
Did you ever own an early computer? An Apple II or Commodore, The two previ- ously mentioned computers systems can be played legally through emulators so fire up the floppy because “The Commodore is still keeping up with you”.
Downloading the Applewin emulator and the Aliens disk image The first time you do this, it may take a while to download WinZip, the emulator and the disk images to your computer is about ten to fifteen minute process. Therefore, be patient the payoff is worth it, and as you get more familiar with the process, it might even take less time. The instructions are broken up into sections so you can do one section and stop and come back and finish the rest later. It is understandable that you may want to do it all at once, but it is broken down into sections in the hope that this cuts down on stress and frustration that can accom- pany learning a new skill STEP ONE: Please download WinZip by following the directions in section one Tools That Must be in Your Box and follow the directions for downloading WinZip before moving on. STEP TWO: Access your ISP, and in the address bar of your web browser type http://gamesng.com/defeat-your-friend/ A screenshot of the webpage is pictured at the top of the next page.
STEP THREE: On the screen above double click “Download version 1.142 STEP FOUR: A save box will come up like the one seen below.
STEP FIVE: Click “Save” STEP SIX: On the next screen there will be a “save as” box and right below that will be a save in box with a little pull-down menu to the right of it make sure it reads “save in desktop” then click “save” A screenshot can be seen below.STEP SEVEN: The program will download and leave a box like the one pictured on the next page. Download speed will depend on your modem there will not be a blue bar this time but you will see the number of bits(the amount of the total file increase make sure there is an x in the box that says “close this dialogue box when download completes, if there is no x in it Click that box.
STEP EIGHT: There should be a yellow box on your desktop that says “Ap- plewin_1.14” (all zip files will look like yellow boxes) Double click the yellow box la- beled “Applewin_1.14” like the screen pictured below.
STEP THIRTEEN: The unzipped folder should be on your screen and looks like the one pictured on the next page.
Go up to “Edit” click “select all” and then under edit click “copy” to copy all the folders contents. STEP FOURTEEN: Right click on the desktop a menu will come down select “New” Another Menu will come down, select “folder”, and name the folder Applewin. As seen in the screenshot pictured at the top of next page.
STEP FIFTEEN: Double click on the new folder and open it. It should look like this.
STEP TEN: On the next screen click “next”
STEP ELEVEN: On the next screen click “next”
STEP NINE: On the screen that comes up click “Use evaluation version”.Right-click anywhere in the folder and paste all the contents so folder now looks like the one pictured on the top of the next page.
NOW YOU HAVE WINZIP AND AN APPLE EMULATOR WAY TO GO! WHICH WE WILL LEAVE ALONE FOR NOW, Now it is time to download the Aliens disk image.
